Need a hunter education course before fall?

IDFG News

Sign up now for the next independent study course.

Because Lewiston area hunter education courses are either completed or already filled with students, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) encourages those who have not completed Idaho’s hunter education requirement, to register for the next independent study course field day offered August 11 in Lewiston.

The independent study course is designed for students who have already completed either the online course option or the workbook option.

In addition to the coursework, students must attend a field day where they receive Idaho-specific trainin. They must pass a written exam and field and live fire exercises required of all hunter education students.

Field days for the entire area are only held in Lewiston. The last field day scheduled before the general deer hunting season begins will be October 6 and is expected to fill very quickly.

Hunters interested in taking the August 11 field day must pre-register by contacting the Lewiston IDFG office, 3316 16th Street, 208-799-5010.

Only a limited number of students will be accepted. A registration fee of $8 is required as well as the student’s social security number, phone, date of birth and mailing address.

Before starting either option of the independent study course, IDFG encourages students to review the course requirements by visiting the department’s website at fishandgame.idaho.gov and clicking on the Education page.

The workbook option requires students to complete a 40-page workbook and attend a field day. Student manuals, workbooks and study materials may be obtained from IDFG.

The online course option requires students to complete Today’s Hunter, a nine-chapter online course and the pre-certification exam available through the IDFG Website. Upon completion of the exam, students can print a certificate of course completion.

This certificate is required for admittance to the field day. There is a $15 examination fee for the pre-certification exam and certificate, which is paid directly online.
