Wild Idaho News (WIN) announces a new partnership with Citizens Against Poaching (CAP) – in conjunction with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG). The new feature entitled “Busted” will target the major poaching violations from throughout the state and publish them as reported from court reported depositions.
“We contacted fish and game agencies in other states where similar features ran and they noted that it was a deterrent and a great source of embarrassment for the poacher,” said Douglas Schleis, editor and publisher of WIN.
“We have always tried to publish as many of the major poaching violations as possible,” explained Schleis. “I feel it is a great way to set an example that eventually your going to get caught, and it’s going to cost you.”
Schleis noted that the stories of violators getting “Busted” were a popular item for the publication. “Our readership really dislikes, I would call it hate, for the violators who steal our wildlife.”
Former IDFG Director and CAP board member Jerry Conley said he felt the new feature will be a welcome addition to WIN as well as a way to keep the issue of reporting poachers in the news and on people’s minds.
“From an enforcement standpoint we hope that people see benefit of reporting poachers when possible. The public’s eyes and ears can be the best tool for catching poachers,” said Conley. “We are happy to have WIN show the results of good enforcement and good reporting to the Poaching Hotline through the 800 number.”
With a renewed effort for better statewide coverage, Schleis hopes the result will be more citizens reporting violators.
“I always hear from people who saw this or heard of that, but when I asked if they called the 1-800-632-5999 they mumble something about not being near a phone or not wanting to get involved,” he continued. “Perhaps this will show people that reporting the violation works and they can make a difference.”
WIN policy will be to publish only major and blatant or gross violations of Idaho game laws such as wasteful destruction of game or take or kill game out of season. Minor violations of one fish over limit or fishing with barbed hooks, unless associated with other major violations will not be published.
These disposition records were provided to the IDFG by the County Courts of Idaho who are the official keepers of the records. These records may be amended by the county courts without our knowledge or without notification from the courts.
WIN will make every reasonable effort to assure accuracy of those records. Errors and omissions, if any, will be retracted in the next published issue.
Here are a few examples of the disposition records for February, 2008. a more complete list will be published in the first issue of WIN each month.
