Whitetail deer poached in Bingham County

IDFG
Jennifer Jackson
6/2/2008

On Tuesday May 13, a landowner contacted Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) to report two dead whitetail deer, both does, found on his property.  The deer were discovered about a half-mile apart in crop fields next to River Road in the McTucker Ponds area of Bingham County.  IDFG officers determined that the deer were killed with either rifle or pistol bullets, and both were shot sometime between late Monday, May 12, and the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 13.  Both deer were carrying full-term twin fawns, and all were left to waste.

On Friday, May 16, a third whitetail buck deer was found by the same landowner in the same area as the other deer.  The buck’s carcass was located in a field’s low spot behind a rock outcropping, and was also shot by either rifle or pistol at the same general time as the other deer.  The head of this deer was cut off partway down the neck and taken away; the rest of the deer was left to waste.

Evidence was gathered from all three deer carcasses and from the three individual scenes.  The vehicle used by the individuals may be a small or mid-sized truck or small SUV with narrow tires.  The tire tread was similar to that found on lighter weight vehicles.   There is a good possibility that the vehicle may have sustained some underbody damage or front end damage.

Perhaps you know of someone who recently acquired a whitetail buck deer head with antlers in the velvet stage, or maybe you have other information about the above incidents.  If so, please contact the Idaho Fish and Game at 232-4703 or Citizens Against Poaching (CAP) 1-800-632-5999.  A reward of $250.00 can be received for information leading to an arrest in these violations, and the caller can remain anonymous.

Poachers steal wildlife from the rest of us.  If you would like to contribute to the reward, please contact either of the numbers above or 251-9403.
