The 2008 Idaho Salmon and Steelhead Days event will be held Sept. 10-12 at the MK Nature Center, located at 600 South Walnut in Boise. A salmon barbeque is scheduled for Sept. 11 at 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the IDFG Headquarters next to the MK Nature Center. (See back page for details)

Idaho Salmon and Steelhead Days, Inc. was developed out of a concern for Idaho’s salmon and steelhead resources. All of Idaho’s wild sockeye salmon, Chinook salmon, and steelhead were found to be at risk of extinction by 1996. The founders of Idaho Salmon and Steelhead days recognized the need to inform our youth about this serious and important issue and so they initiated Idaho Salmon & Steelhead Days in 1997. The goal of the new event was (and remains) to elevate public awareness and appreciation of the cultural, historical and economic importance of Idaho’s anadromous fishes. The founders hoped enhanced awareness of the status of these fish resources would foster support for salmon recovery restoration.

Salmon and Steelhead Day was designed to be a quality, outdoor, natural resource education event targeting fourth-grade students from public and private schools in southwest Idaho. For a host of reasons, fifth graders became our target audience in 2003.

The event consists of three days dedicated to the students and one evening set aside for a salmon barbecue with some education activities that is open to the general public. During three very busy days, volunteers guide 700 or more 5th graders per day (and their teachers and chaperones) through five modules that present biological, cultural, historical, and economic facts about Idaho’s salmon resources. Students participate in hands-on activities while learning about these unique fish, their fresh water and ocean habitats, and the past and present relationship between humans and salmon. Having fun is a key element of the activities.

Idaho Salmon & Steelhead Days is non-commercial, non-profit and non-politically oriented. A partnership of agencies, organizations, businesses, and corporations and many individual volunteers fund, plan and execute this event annually. If you have questions about the event contact Susan Emerson, Executive Director, at 208-869-7238 or scpemerson@gmail.com.
